- Action- This genre is characterized by a lot of movement from the characters and the dialogue if often very brief.
- Adventure- This genre is about traveling and main characters undertaking high intensity adventures! The characters usually never stay in one place and are always going to different places with a certain goal in mind. This genre overlaps with the action genre a lot.
- Comedy- This genre is characterized by jokes usually displayed in a real life setting. The jokes consist of clean, dirty, rom-com, and parody jokes. The dialogue is for the most part relatively fast.
- Drama/tragedy- This genre consists of passionately spoken lines that emphasis emotion. You can use these types of shows to learn more about how Japanese people use body language when they are speaking.
- Fantasy- This genre usually starts off in a magical setting and the main characters on an adventure. Mystical elements are often used in this genre that helps captivate the audience in this dreamlike genre.
- Magic- This genre is when the plot focuses on a phenomenon that can’t be explained scientifically. This genre would not be a good one to watch if you are trying to learn Japanese because it tends to focus on describing the fictional setting as a main part of the show.
- Supernatural- This genre is oftentimes described as bizarre, mythical, mystical or out of this world. Usually this genre also includes a bit of mystery in it as well.
- Horror- In this genre you will most likely find yourself watching something to do with supernatural creatures. Some common traits for the horror genre is blood, gore, and violence. The main idea behind this genre is that it is supposed to creep you out and scare you.
- Mystery- In all mystery shows you will find that there is always the existence of a central enigma. In the most popular mystery shows there are usually detectives and gumshoes.
- Psychological- This genre focuses a lot on the mind of each individual character and tends to use advance vocabulary.
- Romance- This genre is all about love. In anime especially the plot usually involves two characters that don’t confess their love for each other until the very end or a love triangle where two characters fight for the same love interest. The setting is usually realistic but fictional.
- Science Fiction- This genre typically showcases scientific and technological elements in a story. Most of the time the focus of these stories are a development or advancement of a machine of some sort. Oftentimes space is a sub genre of science fiction.
